At the beginning of the series, Öykü’s life changes suddenly when the woman who raised her can no longer take care of her. She is left with only one clue: the name of the father she has never known. That father is Demir. Öykü spends much of her childhood believing that her father is dead. So when she finally discovers that he is alive, she wants only one thing: to be loved by him.

What makes Öykü such a special character is that she understands much more than adults realize. She notices when people are lying. She understands when someone is struggling. And sometimes, she tries to protect the adults around her — even when she is the one who needs protection.

Meryem’s Take: As a mother, I sometimes found myself wanting to reach through the screen and hug Öykü. She is such a small child, but she carries an incredible amount of emotional responsibility. And perhaps that is what makes her relationship with Demir so powerful. She doesn’t need a perfect father. She simply wants her father.

Demir Göktürk

Pronunciation: roughly Deh-MEER

Demir is Öykü’s biological father. And when we first meet him, let’s just say… he is not ready for fatherhood. Demir grew up without the kind of stable family Öykü desperately wants. He has spent much of his life surviving on his own and getting into trouble with his partner-in-crime, Uğur.

Then suddenly, an eight-year-old girl appears and tells him: “I’m your daughter.” Demir’s first reaction is not exactly warm. He panics. He wants his old life back. He sees Öykü as a responsibility he never asked for. And honestly? Part of me wanted to shout at him: “Demir! She’s eight!”

But that’s also what makes his character interesting. Because even while Demir says he doesn’t want to be a father, his actions sometimes tell a different story. When Öykü is in danger, he protects her. When she needs him, he begins to notice. And slowly, whether he wants to admit it or not, something inside him starts changing.

Meryem’s Take: In my experience, Turkish people are generally incredibly warm and affectionate toward children. So Demir’s attitude toward Öykü surprised me at first. But then I thought about his situation. Imagine living freely as a young, single man. Then one day, a child you have never met suddenly appears and tells you that she is your daughter. No preparation. No warning. No parenting manual. I think most people would panic. So while I still want to tell him, “Please be nicer to her!” I can also understand why he wants to run away.

Candan Hoşgör

Pronunciation: roughly JAN-dan

Candan is a veterinarian with a quiet life — and a painful past. She becomes involved in Demir and Öykü’s lives almost by accident. But very quickly, Öykü begins to trust her. Candan offers something that Öykü desperately needs: a sense of safety.

While Demir is still trying to understand how to be a father, Candan naturally steps into a caring role. But Candan has her own emotional wounds. She carries guilt about something that happened in her past, and that guilt shapes many of her decisions. At first, she doesn’t know the full truth about Demir. And that’s what makes their relationship so complicated. Candan is opening her heart to a man who is hiding a great deal from her.

Meryem’s Take: One thing I enjoy about Candan is that she doesn’t simply exist as a romantic character. She has her own story. Her own pain. And her own reasons for becoming attached to Öykü. Watching her relationship with Öykü grow is one of the emotional highlights of the series.

Uğur

Uğur is Demir’s closest friend and partner in crime. The two of them have been involved in questionable plans for years. And when Öykü suddenly enters Demir’s life, Uğur finds himself pulled into the chaos as well.

Uğur is often responsible for some of the funniest moments in Kızım. His plans don’t always go as expected. Actually… they rarely go as expected. But beneath the comedy, Uğur is an important part of Demir’s life. The two men have a friendship built on surviving difficult situations together. And as Öykü becomes part of Demir’s world, Uğur also has to figure out what role he will play in this unexpected new family.

Supporting Characters

Cemal

Pronunciation: roughly Jemal

Cemal has a complicated history with Demir. When he re-enters the story, he brings old conflicts and new danger with him. His presence reminds us that Demir’s past is never very far away. Just when Demir is beginning to build something new with Öykü, the people and problems from his old life keep pulling him backward.

Jilet

Jilet is another figure from Demir’s dangerous world. He puts pressure on Demir and becomes part of the growing list of problems Demir needs to deal with.
