For several episodes, Öykü has been carrying a secret that she is terrified to share with Demir.

She is sick. Her doctor knows. But her father doesn’t.
In Episode 8, that secret finally reaches a breaking point—and Demir’s life changes forever.
🚨 Spoiler warning: This recap contains major spoilers for Episode 8 of Kızım.
Öykü Doesn’t Want Demir to Know
Dr. İhsan knows that Öykü’s condition is serious and believes that Demir has a right to know. But Öykü begs him to keep quiet.
Her fear is not really about the illness itself. She is afraid of what the illness might mean for her relationship with her father.
Öykü has already experienced abandonment once. She finally has a father who is beginning to love her, protect her, and make room for her in his life. What if telling him the truth makes him leave? For an eight-year-old girl, that fear is enormous.
So Öykü makes a desperate decision. She runs away. The official episode summary confirms that after speaking with the doctor, Öykü disappears because she sees running away as the only solution.
Demir Panics When Öykü Disappears
When Demir realizes that Öykü is gone, he becomes terrified. This is an important moment in Demir’s transformation.
Earlier in the series, Demir saw Öykü as a responsibility that had been forced upon him. Now, the possibility of losing her is unbearable.
He searches for her because he doesn’t simply want to find the child he is responsible for. He wants to find his daughter. That distinction says a lot about how far Demir has come.
💬 My Turkish Husband Says: You Know Someone Matters When You Start to Fear Losing Them
One thing I find interesting about Demir’s character is that his transformation doesn’t happen through one big speech. It happens through his reactions.
He worries. He gets angry. He panics. He tries to protect Öykü. And sometimes he makes mistakes because he doesn’t know how to handle all of these new emotions.
Sometimes you don’t realize how important someone has become until you imagine them no longer being there. That may be exactly what is happening to Demir. He didn’t choose fatherhood at the beginning. But now he cannot imagine losing Öykü.
Social Services Come to Inspect the House
Demir doesn’t even have time to recover from Öykü’s disappearance before another problem arrives. Social Services announce that they want to inspect Öykü’s living conditions.
Demir is completely unprepared. This is especially stressful because he knows that his life is not exactly what most people would consider a stable family environment. He has to prove that Öykü is safe and cared for.
The official synopsis describes the sudden inspection as another major test for Demir, particularly because he is once again confronted with the possibility of losing Öykü.
Demir Tries to Prove That Öykü Belongs With Him
Demir and Uğur scramble to prepare the house. They try to make everything look suitable for Öykü. There is something both funny and touching about watching them attempt to create the image of a respectable family home.
But underneath the comedy is a serious question: Can Demir really be a father? He may not have a perfect home. He may not have a perfect life. But he genuinely cares about Öykü now. And that is something that cannot simply be measured during a home inspection.
The Question That Hurts Demir
During the inspection, Öykü is asked whether she wants to stay with her father or go to a children’s home. Her answer hurts Demir. She doesn’t immediately choose him. From Demir’s point of view, this feels like rejection.
But Öykü has a completely different reason for saying what she does. She is already thinking about what will happen if her father discovers her illness. She believes that she may eventually have to leave him anyway. So she is trying to prepare herself.
Demir doesn’t understand that. And that makes the scene especially painful. He thinks his daughter doesn’t want him. In reality, she is afraid that he won’t want her once he knows the truth.
Öykü’s Secret Finally Comes Out
Meanwhile, Dr. İhsan is under increasing pressure. He knows that hiding Öykü’s illness from Demir is no longer realistic. Eventually, Demir is called to the doctor. And there, he finally hears the truth.
Öykü is seriously ill. Demir is devastated. The news completely changes his understanding of everything that has happened. Her strange behavior. Her fear. Her secrets. Her disappearance. Suddenly, it all makes sense.
Reports following the episode confirm that Demir learns about Öykü’s illness after Dr. İhsan tells him the truth.
Demir’s Reaction Says Everything
Demir doesn’t respond with anger toward Öykü. He doesn’t blame her. He doesn’t walk away. He goes to find her. And when he sees his daughter, he embraces her.
After everything Öykü was afraid of, this moment is incredibly important. She thought: “If Baba knows, he might leave me.” But Demir does the opposite. He comes closer.
💬 My Turkish Husband Says: This Is When Demir Becomes Her Father
For me, this is the emotional turning point of the first part of Kızım. Demir was already behaving more like a father before this episode. But now he knows what being Öykü’s father really means.
He knows she is sick. He knows she was frightened. And he knows she tried to protect herself by keeping the truth from him. He could have reacted in many ways. Instead, he chooses to stay. That choice matters.
🇯🇵 Japan and 🇹🇷 Turkey: When Family Problems Become Everyone’s Problem
This episode also made me think about something I’ve noticed between Japanese and Turkish family culture.
In Japan, people sometimes hesitate to tell others about serious personal problems because they don’t want to worry them or become a burden. There can be a strong feeling of: “I don’t want to cause trouble for anyone.”
Öykü’s situation is different, but there is a similar emotional idea behind her silence. She thinks she is protecting Demir by keeping the truth from him. But Demir would probably say that she should never have carried something this heavy alone.
Of course, families differ enormously, both in Japan and Turkey. But in my experience, Turkish family relationships can sometimes involve a stronger expectation that difficult problems should be faced together rather than carried privately. And that is exactly what Demir now has to learn.
Öykü Was Never Trying to Lie
This is one of the things I find most heartbreaking about Öykü. She isn’t hiding her illness because she doesn’t love Demir. She is hiding it because she loves him.
She is afraid of losing the first real family relationship she has ever had. For a child, that fear can be stronger than the fear of the illness itself. And Demir finally understands that.
The Meaning of “Baba”
One word becomes even more meaningful after this episode: Baba.
In Turkish, baba simply means “father” or “dad.” But Öykü’s relationship with Demir has slowly changed the meaning of that word.
At the beginning, Demir was simply the man who happened to be her biological father. Now he is becoming the person she expects to protect her. And Demir is beginning to understand that being a baba isn’t just about being someone’s biological parent. It means staying when things become difficult.
🇹🇷 Turkish Language Corner
- Hastalık — Illness / disease (hastalık = illness; hasta = sick / ill)
- Doktor — Doctor (doktor = doctor; Doktor Bey = Mr. Doctor, a respectful form of address)
- Sır — Secret (sır = secret; sırrımı saklamak = to keep my secret)
- Kaçmak — To run away / escape (kaçmak = to run away; kaçtı = he/she ran away)
- Baba — Dad / father (baba = father; babam = my father; kızım = my daughter / my girl)
And one simple sentence that captures the heart of this episode:
Baba, beni bırakma.
“Dad, don’t leave me.”
Episode 8 Changes Everything
Until now, Demir was learning how to be a father. Now he has to learn how to be the father of a sick child. That is a completely different challenge.
The secret that Öykü thought might destroy their relationship may actually become the thing that brings them even closer. But knowing the truth also means that Demir can no longer pretend that everything is going to be normal. From this point forward, father and daughter have a very different journey ahead of them.
💭 My Thoughts on Episode 8
Episode 8 is one of those episodes where the title Kızım—”My Daughter”—feels especially powerful.
Demir could have walked away. Instead, he runs toward Öykü. That is the real change in him. He doesn’t become a perfect father overnight. He simply makes one important choice: He stays.
And sometimes, for a child who is afraid of being abandoned, staying is the most powerful thing a parent can do.
What Will Happen Next?
Now Demir knows the truth. How will he deal with Öykü’s illness? Will he become overprotective? How will Candan react when she learns what is happening? And what will happen to Demir and Öykü’s relationship now that there are no more secrets between them?
Episode 8 closes one chapter of their story. But it opens a much more difficult one.

💬 My Turkish Husband Says…
I’m a Japanese Muslim woman married to a Turkish man. Turkish dramas, culture & life — seen through my eyes.
Sometimes being a father isn’t about having all the answers. Sometimes it simply means being there when your child is most afraid.
